2011 Race list (Thus Far)

I have a lot of races coming up, so I thought it might be fun to put them all in one place!

Doyle’s Pub Emerald Necklace 5 Miler

5 Miles Jamaica Plain, MA 4/10/11

From what I’ve heard this is a great 5 mile course along the Emerald Necklace in Jamaica Plain. It’s complete with a great free race T-Shirt & free beer, how can you beat that?

BAA 5k

5k Boston, MA 4/17/11

A fun & popular 5k that takes place the day before the marathon. It’s officially the most expensive 5k I have ever registered for, but the awesome t-shirt, medal, fast field & finishing under the official Boston Marathon finish line makes it worth it.

Jamestown Bridge 10k

10k Jamestown, RI 4/23/11

This race is apparently very hilly and challenging and weaves throughout scenic Jamestown and Newport, RI. I definitely need the hill race experience so this is a no-brainer in my book. Plus Katy & I will be running this one together!

Boston Marine Corps Honor Run

5k South Boston, MA 5/7/11

Walking distance from my apartment and a fun way to kick off an old fashioned day drinking party, the Kentucky Derby. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of friends involved in this fun and flat 5k.

Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon

Half Marathon Newton, MA 5/15/11

Oh Heartbreak, we meet again. Remember that time I vowed to never run you again? Well, those emotions were fleeting and I’m hungry and ready for more! I’m looking forward to improving upon last year’s time which given my awful race, won’t be terribly difficult

JP Morgan Corporate Challenge

3.5 Miles Boston, MA 6/2/11

One of my favorite spring/summer events in Boston! It starts and ends at Boston Common, and it’s a great chance to get out of the office with coworkers and get your sweat on followed by a few celebratory brews afterwards.

Yarmouth Run for the Arts 5k

5k Bass River, MA 6/18/11

This race is in the neighborhood of my family’s house on the cape, and it also happens to be on my Birthday! Plus, I can convince Foxy to run with me 🙂

Nantucket Triathlon

Sprint Tri Nantucket Island, MA 7/23/11

I’m pretty excited for this one, it’s a great excuse to get to Nantucket during the peak summer months and spend time with friends! This is the weekend before SF so I will be keeping this fun and avoiding ruining my taper.

San Francisco Marathon

Full Marathon San Francisco, CA 7/31/11

This is the biggie. I absolutely CAN’T WAIT. I have a good feeling about this one.

Hyannis Sprint II Triathlon

Sprint Triathlon Hyannis, MA 9/10/11

I’m excited to have another sprint triathlon on the schedule that I can go full bore and actually race. It’s helpful that this is close to my family’s house and it’s a great chance to see my mom 🙂

That’s it for now. I’m considering a few fall Half Marathons, hoping to get a spot on a Reach the Beach Relay team, the Tufts 10k and numerous other races. Decisions, decisions!

What does your race schedule look like? Do you have any suggestions of races I should add?

Scenes from the Saturday and Looking Back on Swimming…

Thank you to everyone for the comments on my St. Patrick’s Day Weekend party conundrum. I ended up being able to balance celebrating AND running (both days, yay!) this past weekend. I did receive a few phone calls and texts asking where I was, but I was really happy that I was able to get in a beautiful run along the river with some DetermiNation New England Runners, volunteer at the Multisport World Expo, make cupcakes and then enjoy a few brews.

Saturday morning was kicked off with a 5.3 mile run along the Charles River. Unfortunately my photos didn’t capture the beautiful early spring weather as I had hoped, but I’m sharing them with you guys anyways.

We finished the run just before 9am, 5.32 miles in 49:58/9:23 pace. It was just what I needed, a nice easy run and a chance to catch up with Katy! Still sweaty from the run, I sprinted back to the car and drove over to the Zeiger Sports complex at MIT to volunteer for at the Multisport World Expo.

Want to Learn More About Barefoot Running? Come to This Event!

For those of you who read my blog, know full well how much I LOVE Marathon Sports. I’m on their mailing list, and seeing how much I love them I just wanted to share an event they will be hosting this Thursday at their Boston location. Check out the details from their mailing list posting:

For those of you who have read Born to Run, author Chris McDougall’s diatribe on barefoot running, the most frequently quoted expert within is Cambridge local, Harvard Professor Daniel Lieberman.

Right on the heels of publishing a major study on the effects of barefoot running in the journal Nature, professor Lieberman is now making a tour of sorts in an attempt to demystify the science behind the study, and to help clear the air on the barefoot running phenomenon.

Q&A With The Barefoot Professor
Dan Lieberman
This minimalist running thing still has the running world abuzz, and is showing no signs of slowing. With the introduction of several new products to our product line in support of it, from Vibram and Newton to the new Saucony Kinvara, Marathon Sports is now more than ever ready to tackle the demands of each and every runner looking to make the switch.

In a show of true solidarity, Harvard Professor Dan Lieberman (the oft-quoted expert in Chris McDougall’s Born to Run and coauthor of the recentNature study which lends credence to the claim that barefoot running can indeed decrease injury risk) has offered to subject himself to a barrage of questions from eager Marathon Sports loyalists on Thursday, May 27th in our Boston store.

From 6-8pm, stop by to see the man himself, explore a bit of the data discovered in the recent study, and pick Professor Lieberman’s brain until his voice goes hoarse.

For a full bio, check out Professor Lieberman’s webpage.

Dan Lieberman Talks Barefoot

When:

I’m personally skeptic of barefoot running, but I would love to learn a little bit more about what benefits it can have for runners. I’m going to try to stop by this, and hopefully meet some fellow runners while I’m at it!!
