2013 Goals

1. Put Foxy First

I am very lucky to have such a loving, supportive, funny, intelligent and all around AWESOME husband. Since the moment I met him he has always shown how important his friends, family and now wife, are to him on a daily basis. I am extremely thankful to have found him and I am equally, if not more, lucky that he deals with me and my headstrong  and intense ways. And with a smile, nonetheless!


More often than not, when I’m training I find myself getting wrapped up in the details. “My foot is hurting, is it a stress fracture?” or “how am I going to fit in a long run over this wedding weekend in x city?” or “I had a bad run, am I cut out for this marathon stuff?” or, just the general random sobs and blabbering out of fear and frustration with training and racing. First and foremost, my goal this year is to make sure to put everything into perspective and put Foxy first. He always is undeniably there for me through anything and never complains about my endorphin obsessed ways. I want to put it out on the interweb that my goal is to not sweat the small stuff and constantly remind myself to channel and put into practice the selfless ways of #1 supporter.

2. Buy a bike

As a life long swimmer and lover of the water and runner since college, I’ve always wanted to become a triathlete. However, the fear of cycling has always been a gigantic barrier to entry. Since 2011 I have signed up for a few triathlons with hopes that I would make the plunge and buy a bike, but other expenses and trips always seem to get in the way. I’ve always seemed to have gotten by with spinning classes and borrowing friends bikes. But, with the decision made to sign up for this race, it’s more important than ever to get the right gear for the sport.

3. Get into cycling and get over my fears

Once I have the gear, I want to find a group to go on rides with and get some log some solid distance training rides. I definitely avoid cycling because I have a lot of fears associated with cycling in this city. But, it’s time to face my fears find some trails outside of downtown Boston and get more adept to this huge portion of any triathlon race. Ultimately, this will make me a stronger rider.

4. Stay injury free in 2013

This is probably the corner stone to all of my athletic goals for 2013. Foxy would appreciate if I stay injury free aka, stay away from the “Glass case of emotion” injured self. I’m tackling this goal with the following:

  1. Hot Yoga once a week (no exceptions!)
  2. Clams & other hip exercises
  3. Foam rolling every day I run, if not 7 days a week.

5. Complete the Boston Marathon

Growing up in Boston, the marathon has always been a major bucket list item. I’ve watched countless friends make the turn onto Boylston st and year after year of cheering has only intensified the yearning to also complete this prestigious  race.  As much as I would like to set a goal time, I mostly just want to finish. The last time I ran (or ran/walked) a marathon was in 2009. I think it’s finally time to avenge that race and finish my life long goal of running Boston, and finishing with a smile on my face.

6. Complete the Timberman Half Ironman

I forget when I first heard the concept of an Ironman, but it has been my bucketlist/ultimate reach goal for at least fifteen years now. It fascinates and scares the bejesus out of me.

Since an Ironman has 112 mile bike ride, I realized that if I never accomplished goals #2 and 3, I would never even get close to the full Ironman distance. This is still a few years in the future, and it is something that Foxy and I will make together. Since my long range goals require me to get more serious about all aspects of the sport of triathlon, I figured that 2013 was the perfect time to dive head first and sign up for my first half ironman.

I do have a goal time in mind, I am not sharing that until closer to the race. At this juncture all I want to do is finish.

So, that’s it folks! I’m sure that these will change and morph over time, but at this point these are my goals for 2013.

Five, errr one thing, Friday

I have finally made it to the end of the week, hooray! I am lucky that my employer gives all of their employees the week off in-between Christmas and New Years Day, which this year is actually a week a two whole days!

Needless to say, I am excited for the time off and also the chance to unplug without worrying about how the status of projects, deadlines, bla bla bla.

So instead of the traditional Five Things Friday or Friday Faves, I’m switching it to one thing: Happiness, and the things that have brought a smile to my face this past week.

Three Things Thursday

Howdy folks! I know I’ve been a bit of a recluse lately, and I vow to change that! Life has just been a bit busy lately with work, wedding season, summer gatherings and it’s been tough to keep up! I’m also nursing a hip injury that has left me wanting to stay silent rather than broadcasting my injury to the world. Luckily it’s on the mend. I’m currently in the middle of a ridiculous week, and I thought rocking a “Three Things Thursday” Post might be in order.

1. My Five year college reunion is this weekend! I seriously can’t believe it’s already been 5 years, where did the time go? It feels like yesterday that I was competing with my swim team, drinking Natty Light at frat parties, and enjoying having all of my close friends within a stones throw away.

Now we are all scattered throughout the globe, busy working hard in our respective professional careers and setting goals for post collegiate athletics! I’m so excited to see my good friends, live it up in the dorms like it’s 2002-2006 and relive old memories. I wouldn’t be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous of sadness once I leave and realize I only see these amazing people a handful of times a year. But none of that now! Luckily this girl is on the train to positive & awesomeville I will 100% be enjoying all of the amazing events that reliving ones college days entail! Did you recently go to a college reunion? Was it everything you imagined it would be?!

2. The Hip. Luckily, my hip seems to be on the mend. Jake Kennedy at Kennedy Brothers has been fantastic, and thank you so much to Lizzy for putting me in touch with him! Luckily I was able to run the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge without any pain and a 10 mile run two days later without any pain – FIST PUMP!

I am looking forward to being able to return to hills shortly and hopefully not compromise any of my SFM training in the brief break I had to take to let the bursitis calm down.

3. NYC. I’m taking a brief trip to NYC today for an all day training session which meant a 4:45am alarm and a busy day ahead. Luckily the Acela has Wi-Fi and some pretty scenery.

Luckily I have something really fun to look forward to: the Sox vs the Yankees at Yankee Stadium tonight! Then it’s back to Boston for a few hours of work and then it’s REUNION TIME!

March Madness

[Warning…this has nothing to do with running]

It’s that time of year again…



The fans. The brackets. The squeaking of shoes on a basketball court. Coaches freaking out. The calls. The pep bands. THE FANS, THE FANS, THE FANS. Players actually playing with heart.

I’m not the biggest college Basketball fan in the world, but I honestly can’t ever get enough of the NCAA March Madness Tournament. My favorite part is the PASSION for the game and the resolve to win! Watching conference tournaments this weekend it seriously made me want to go out for a run or absolutely CRUSH a treadmill.

Instead of pouring over each and every game like most college basketball fanatics, I will be using these games as motivation to get out there.  I know a college basketball tournament is surely an unlikely place to find motivation, but it gets my blood moving, my heart pumping and the urge to GET AFTER IT.

X-rays you’ve had: teeth/jaw, foot (stress fractures), collar bone (broke it when I was 6) multiple MRI’s on my shoulders and knees

Happy Friday and Congratulations to Ray Allen

Happy Friday everyone! Is it just me or was this week pretty painfully long? In keeping with the spirit of reaching this weekend quicker, I’m going to list out some noteable things that happened this week:

1) Duke beat UNC. All was right in Foxy’s world. (SIDE NOTE: I was brought up to HATE Duke because some of my family members went to Georgetown University. However, since Foxy is a Duke Alum, he has slowly transitioned me from called them “Puke” to actually rooting for them. So Yes, now I am a Duke fan)

2)A Body was found washed ashore on the road where I walk to my gym…apparently my awful walk Tuesday night could have been significantly worse.

3)I went for a run after work and legitimately thought I was getting frostbite in my hands. Note to self, bundle up! Even though I was crying from the pain, it felt nice to detach myself from the confines of the treadmill. Added Bonus: An absolutely amazing sunset

4)Ray Allen broke Reggie Miller’s 3 Point Scoring Record shooting 2,561 3’s. NUTS. Ray, Ray, we salute you!


5) Today is my good friend Courtney‘s Birthday!!!!! Happy Birthday Court 🙂

6) Boston survived a whole work week without a blizzard and some snow banks actually melted – HOORAY!

I’m looking forward to a great weekend of skiing, some yoga, solid time at the gym and organizing my apartment!

Sugar Doll Blogger Award & Good News at Physical Therapy…

My good friend Lizzy over at http://www.foodtorunfor.blogspot.com harassed me to update my blog and fill out a quick “10 things about me” list she calls the “Sugar Doll Blogger Award”. Lizzy, I apologize for not updating my blog as frequently as I would like, sometimes injuries and life get in the way, wah, wahhhh. Luckily, this magical little post is just the trick to getting me back to posting on a regular basis

1. My laugh is a bit over the top, but the people that love me have completely embraced it!

2. I really can’t stand lazy and unmotivated people. There I said it! My mother once told me, “Kim you don’t sit well.” Unfortunately, that means that I get bothered or annoyed by others that have that premonition! I am very ambitious and sometimes I tend to judge people that aren’t the same way.

3. I don’t generally watch TV, but when I do, I easily get sucked into bad or useless TV: Anything reality in nature, Keeping up with Kardashian’s, Say Yes to the Dress, House Hunters (especially international) occasionally the Soup

4. I’m obsessed with taking pictures. As much as I love taking pictures, I’m obsessed with looking at them on the tiny little digital screen on my camera. I guess I just love making memories and reliving them!

5. I’m OBSESSED with baking. I love it so much that I have to actively tell myself not to bake and make a mess of my kitchen. As much as I love baking, I don’t feel compelled to eat every single treat, I enjoy sharing the cupcake love with family, friends and coworkers!

6. My favorite food snack food is carrots. No lies! I can eat an entire bag of baby carrots in one sitting. I’m not sure what it is, I’ve always loved them.

7. I love being active. My worst days are ones where I don’t have the time, or the ability to work out. Whether it is running, swimming, yoga, core fusion, a class at the gym, or even a class at the gym, I love it all!

8. My friends mean the world to me, and I am extremely lucky to have so many close friends all over the country, and the globe. I firmly believe that “Good friends are like stars, you might not always see them, but you always know they’re there”

9. I HATE elevators. Of course, it doesn’t help that I work in a very tall building and I have to take an elevator anytime I want to do anything on a different floor than my own, boo. I dislike being in small spaces and also how hot and sweaty they are, ICK!

10. I tend to get overly emotional. For those who know me closely, it’s no surprise, for others who know me on the surface it probably is. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve and get caught up in things, whether that means crying on my way to work because I see the same hopeless homeless man in the same spot every morning on my way to work, or beating myself up for days over a simple mistake that was barely noticed by my bosses. I like to think that it makes life a little more complex, but it’s better to feel too much than to not feel at all!

Now that I finished my 10 things (phew!) I have FANTASTIC news!!! On Friday July 30th, I visited my physical therapist, Angela (a fellow runner, hooray!) and she tested my knee to see how it was healing. After a few minutes of walking on a treadmill, I was able to slowly run, then walk, run some more, walk again, and I repeated this series for roughly 20 minutes. After confirming several times that I felt good and I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort she cleared me to resume training for Chicago! Hooooray! Angela is so fantastic that she went through my entire marathon training program and amended the remainder of the schedule. After working out a plan to run 3 days a week and slowly increase my milage, she was able to get my longest run up to 18 miles roughly 3 weeks before, which is significantly longer than I thought I would be cleared for! Thank you for all of the support and continue to send good vibes my way in hopes that my knee holds together until 10-10-10!
